Yoga and Weight Training

Article by Apeppe

Yoga has become part of Western fitness training techniques. However, there are some who have never tried it, relegating it as a hippie trend from the 60's. Those individuals would rather look at their flexed bicep in the mirror at their gym. They look for the feedback loop from that experience which gives them the feeling of "working out". This is definitely the group they want to be in. They consider themselves the hard core fitness enthusiasts and label yoga as something for women in white leotards. Is there any truth to this?

The answer lies in a more general definition of fitness. We need to step back and look at the big picture. Those who participate in any kind of exercise, do so to improve their physical fitness level. There is also the benefit of feeling good, mentally and emotionally. Fitness satisfies the needs of the body, mind and spirit. It is a great feedback loop to make the human being better able to handle the world around them.

Traditional Western fitness methodologies have addressed the need for cardiovascular improvements, benefits from resistance training and stretching. Cardiovascular methods are defined by those activities which increase the heart rate to a specified zone and keep it there for the duration of the activity, a minimum of 20 minutes. These activities include running, walking, cycling, swimming, and hiking as natural activities. When weather or other conditions do not permit outside activity, machines can be utilised such as cross-trainers, treadmills and stationary bikes.

All training that is carried on in Western style fitness programs are based on physical reactions to external stimuli. If your mind is not focussed on the exercise, there is still some benefit to the actions alone. However, all fitness enthusiasts are constantly reminded that they need to be focussed on the activity to obtain the greatest benefit from it. Lifting a weight still has its physical implications if the action is carried out as if one were on auto-pilot.

yo! ga was i nvented to bring the human being to the same goal of achieving fitness through a different approach. The word Yoga means joining in Sanskrit. The science of yoga aims to join the disparate body, mind and spirit into an integrated human being who is better able to interact with the outside world in a more efficient manner. The practice was invented in India, 5000 years ago and was developed into a science by observing the effects of various body and mind states on the overall human being. In yoga, one must be focussed or the effects are simply not there. The mind acts on the physical body and it responds in turn. In order to improve the state of the being, then, both body and mind must be focussed or joined to an integral viewpoint.

In a more general sense, the Eastern science of body-mind interaction further implies that all diseases of the body can be cured through the power of yoga. Yoga is not just about the physical body. Yoga incorporates many mental techniques for gaining command over the physical body. Breathing exercises were developed to gain control over one's own mind. Many different breathing exercises were developed in order to produce different physical results. All of them have warnings attached to them for special populations. In fact physical yogic positions or asanas are also limiting to certain special populations. Each such exercise needs to be taught in more detail to participants, rather than in a haphazard way as a general method for fitness to all populations. The exceptions should be understood so that people do not experience negative effects from the yoga asanas. It is therefore important to have a teacher who is aware of contraindicated populations for all exercises. This information is well known for traditional resistance training, but is not taught to populations studying yoga.

The beauty of yoga is its absolute dependence on nothing but the human being. No external equipment is necessary. However, it is important to focus the body and mind in an integrated way.! Ultimat ely, ones spiritual energy is awakened. The person is better able to interact with the world in a more efficient.

Brains Benefit From Yoga - Here's How

People who meditate seem to be able 'switch off' areas of the brain associated with daydreaming as well as psychiatric disorders such as autism and schizophrenia, according to a new brain imaging study published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

Meditation's ability to help people stay focused on the moment has been associated with increased happiness levels, said Judson A. Brewer, assistant professor of psychiatry and lead author of the study. To find out more, the team conducted functional magnetic resonance imaging scans on both experienced and novice meditators as they practiced three different meditation techniques.

They found that experienced meditators had decreased activity in areas of the brain called the default mode network, which has been implicated in lapses of attention and disorders such as anxiety, attention deficit and hyperactivity disorder, and even the buildup of beta amyloid plaques in Alzheimer's disease. The decrease in activity in this network, consisting of the medial prefrontal and posterior cingulate cortex, was seen in experienced meditators regardless of the type of meditation they were doing.

The scans also showed that when the default mode network was active, brain regions associated with self-monitoring and cognitive control were co-activated in experienced meditators but not novices. This may indicate that meditators are constantly monitoring and suppressing the emergence of "me" thoughts, or mind-wandering. In pathological forms, these states are associated with diseases such as autism and schizophrenia.

Use Meditation To Relieve Stress

Article by Chris Impeterelli

Meditation is a form of alternative medicine that promotes relaxing and mental calmness through the use of controlling or suspending thoughts for a certain period of time. Since meditation involves physical and mental relaxation, it's a great way to relieve stress.

When some people hear about meditation as a way to relieve stress, they laugh and think it's a bunch of baloney. They think that meditation is not a viable solution to eliminating stress. But research has shown that meditation works and is a practical technique for stress management.

The most notable research on meditation's usefulness in relieving stress was done in 1968 by Dr. Herbert Benson of Harvard University. He conducted a series of experiments on popular meditation techniques and published his findings in the book "The Relaxation Response." He discovered that meditation has a "real effect on reducing stress and controlling the fight-or-flight response." Dr. Benson wrote that meditation increased the skin's resistance to damage or infections, slowed the heartbeat and breathing rate, and reduced oxygen consumption.

Meditation is all about consciously relaxing your mind and body for a period of time. Meditation means that you need to focus inwardly so that your mind is basically so busy concentrating on breathing and body form that there's no time to think about the events that are causing you stress.

The act of meditation is actually quite simple to do. Meditation does not require you to be a mystic or to be very spiritual. Meditation is something that anyone can do almost anywhere.

When you prepare yourself for meditation, be sure to set aside a certain amount of time where you're guaranteed not to be interrupted. Meditation doesn't require hours of practicing at a time for it to be effective in reducing stress. Practicing meditation is ten- or twenty-minute time slots is definitely good enough.

Effective meditation requires that you're in a comfortable, quiet environment. This means that w! hen you practice meditation, you should make sure that you're wearing comfortable, unrestrictive clothing. The atmosphere temperature (whether you're indoors or outdoors) should also be comfortable for you in order to make your meditation session as stress fighting as possible.

Stress-relieving meditation is all about concentration. Once you're fully comfortable (you can sit or lie down) close your eyes. Focus your attention of your breathing throughout your entire meditation session. Count your breaths. You can even say the numbers out loud to discourage your mind from wandering to other thoughts.

Another way to control wandering thoughts when you're in a meditation session is to use imagery. Imagery is very popular in meditation. All you have to with imagery is focus on something you consider refreshing or pleasant. Music is also a popular way to help mind concentration during meditation. You can do a monologue hum. Or you can use some soothing music that features plenty of nature sounds.

The key to meditation is mind control. When you learn to control your mind, you can control your thoughts, and you'll be able to better control the functions of your muscles. Sometimes it takes a bit of time to learn not to let your mind wander to other thoughts while you're in a meditation session. But once you've mastered meditation, you'll discover you'll be able to do it almost anywhere to relax when you're feeling overwhelmed with stress.

Get Your Work-Life Balance Back With Yoga

Article by Kim Archer

With stressful working environments and hectic schedules, many people struggle with the negative impact of their busy work lives. Those who have difficulty managing their personal and work lives in balance with each other are increasingly turning to yoga. Yoga gives them peace of mind so that they can achieve a perfect work-life balance.

The mind-body connection is piquing interest in this ancient practice, and research shows that it can indeed reduce blood pressure and stress, improve your work performance, and even make you age more slowly.

Although the focus on yoga may be different depending on the environment, its basic premise is to relax the body while keeping the mind focused and alert. For example, when you do yoga, you focus on body movement, breath, sound or even an object. When your mind wanders, as it inevitably will, you bring your attention back and start again.

The ancient practice of yoga garnered renewed interest in the 1960s, when those interested in consciousness began to follow its practices. However, after this, yoga began to fall out of favor. It may have been because yoga is not quite like other types of exercise. For one, you need patience in order to get its full benefits. It offers steady but slow results. This is in direct contrast to the almost frenetic activity and quick results of aerobics.

Many people rush to work out every day during their lunch hours, force themselves to keep up a brisk pace, and then rush back to work. Of course, it's probably physically beneficial, but it still adds pressure to an already overwhelmed life. Yoga, by contrast, offers a less competitive and stressful way to work out, while supporting and even causing an overall feeling of simply "being."

One of the major reasons yoga is making a comeback is because it can be so healing as an activity. The over-the-top push for fitness generated by the traditional exercise regimes of aerobics, running, or weight lifting also has caused injuries, including neck pain, b! ack pain , or strained knees. Because we are such a competitive society, these activities have also inspired books, tapes and videos touting this or that as the latest and greatest thing.

Today, even health practitioners are getting in on yoga practice, with chiropractors, neurologists and orthopedic surgeons sometimes referring patients to specific yogis during treatment.

In fact, it's moving to the mainstream increasingly. Mainstream hospitals and businesses are now having yoga techniques taught, while books about these techniques are bestsellers, with discussion groups on the Internet springing up to talk about this "new" innovation as well.

Surprisingly, perhaps, even the Army has gotten in on the act. It has asked the National Academy of Sciences to study New Age techniques such as meditation to see if soldiers' performance can be enhanced in this way.

In addition, yoga has become a pursuit for some runners, weight trainers or aerobic dancers who don't find peace in their exercise regimes and want the de-stressing aspects of yoga to be part of their workouts.

Approximately 60 to 90% of doctors' visits in the U.S. are related to stress. Mind-body approaches offer cost-effective and safe treatments for this ailment that don't involve drugs or surgery. Among people who use these techniques, 34% of patients who are infertile get pregnant within six months, while 70% of those who have trouble sleeping or even have medically defined insomnia become regular sleepers. In addition, the numbers of those suffering from pain and making regular doctor visits because of it go down by 36%.

Yoga - Just What Is It Anyway

Article by Chad Lynch

When you think of yoga, what do you think about? For most people it is some waifish person bending into a pretzel position that leaves them with only one thought, "How?" While such yoga poses are part of an experienced practice, it is not the whole of yoga. So what is Yoga?

Yoga comes from the Sanskrit word "yuj" which means to unite. Yoga has its origins in ancient India. The ancient yogis sought to achieve perfect health and happiness. To do this they knew that one needs to be in balance in body, mind, and spirit. In order to accomplish this goal one has to "unite" these aspects, which in turn will bring about balance in oneself.

The ancient yogis were essentially scientists. They were exploring ways to remain healthy and happy for the extent of one's entire life. It was beyond "growing old gracefully" as we say today, which apparently means accepting increasing aches and pains. Yogis wanted to take an active role in remaining vibrant, lively and healthy. Their studies developed the yoga practices that we know today.

By working with the body we can align the spine, gain more flexibility, and strengthen and tone our muscles. Internal organs are massaged and toned to be in optimal working order. The nervous and endocrine systems are stimulated and nourished. Circulation is improved. All of this brings about improved health physically, balances our emotions, and enhances mental clarity.

Yoga poses, or asanas, are the most outwardly obvious part of a yoga practice. Though there are plenty of yoga positions that will keep the most experienced yogi still challenged, not all poses require such skill. While some people are just naturally more flexible than others, everyone has to start somewhere and build up their agility. Those advanced poses should not frighten anyone away from looking into starting a yoga practice. There are many beginner poses that are easy for the most rigid and out of shape bodies. Beginner classes will introduce one to these starting positions. That is ! not to s ay that some poses may not be a challenge for you. We must challenge ourselves if we wish to improve.

Breathing is another aspect of yoga. Breath is considered the source of life. It is where your involuntary and voluntary functions meet, as you can control your breathing but it also does fine without you thinking about it. Learning to control your breathing can slowly help you to gain control and awareness of the rest of your body, mind and emotions. It can also help improve your breathing.

Meditation is the next aspect of yoga. Some see meditation as a blanking of the mind. That is not necessarily true. It is more accurately a quieting of the mind. One cannot find inner peace if the mind is running all over the place. Meditation settles the mind and improves your awareness and focus.

In the West, some classes and styles may not explore all these aspects. They may focus only on the physical exercise. This is not bad if that is the only part that interests those students. There is still plenty of benefit to gain from focusing on poses. Though usually the other areas are improved as well even without consciously focusing on them.

Yoga: Helping You Cope with Menopause

Article by James Pendergraft

For a woman, her monthly menstrual cycle is a testament to her womanhood. It provides affirmation of her capability to give life and bear children. However, when menopause comes, it indicates not only the cessation of a woman's capability to support life but also an unequivocal sign of aging. To a woman, the menopause is a bittersweet stage when one can look back with satisfaction at a life well loved yet looking forward at the sign that in a few years one will have to tackle aging problems. This can be a tormenting time for any woman, and it can cause emotional torment on her.

However, despite the dreadful imaginings that are attached to menopause, there is hope available that can provide relief from the emotional and physical woes with menopause.

One of these hopes is yoga. This ancient Indian art that is aimed at achieving Holistic physical and emotional balance offers hope that the woman's menopause period need not be that difficult. Thanks to yoga, coping with menopause can be much easier.

Understanding the Benefits of Yoga

1)Yoga is a meditative procedure. Because of this, one will be able to achieve an inner harmony that allows one's mind to be relaxed. In turn, this leads to better blood flow and promotes deep breathing that generally benefits the body.

2)With yoga, one will be able to learn to accept the inevitable things. This is because the art teaches people to become meditative and learn to focus on things other than those that cause strain on one's thinking.

3)By its simple presence, yoga allows people to be preoccupied with something. This allows women going through menopause to have some diversions in their thinking instead of focusing only on menopause.

4)Yoga is commonly done by groups. Because of this, a woman will be able to cultivate friendships with various individuals. This is beneficial in that this system allows a woman to expand her social base. Likewise, this will also enable her to have more friends.Knowing the Requirements! for Yog aYoga can be done alone or with groups. When done alone, a woman must make sure that there will be the least disturbances. A key consideration here is to avoid doing yoga in the living room or in other areas where one is likely to be disturbed. Moreover, it would be better to have it during times when people are less likely to bother each other. At daytime, doing yoga at early afternoon is a great way to avoid distraction. One must select a part of the house where one will have a dose of fresh air. Open the window and relish in the gentle breeze. The soft wind should be relaxing to both mind and body. In order to make yoga more comfortable, one must sit on a praying mat that is comfortable. One must avoid doing yoga in bed or in soft mattresses because movements and shifting of these bases due to application of pressure can distract a person.

6 Great Tips for Teaching Yoga to Children

Children and Yoga

Yoga Children

In the following 2 articles, Yoga for Kids | Guidelines and Benefits and Comprehensive Guide to Teaching Children's Yoga, I shared a great deal of information on yoga for children.  Included in those articles are a large collection of kid's yoga poses and details on how to successfully teach a children's yoga class.  Those articles have helped many kid's yoga teachers and some have requested that I provide more information regarding children's yoga as there is not much reliable information regarding this topic on the web.

So today I am going to share with you 6 tips on how to encourage kids to learn and practice yoga.  Although I am a certified kid's yoga teacher, these tips actually come more from my personal experience than from the knowledge I gained in the teacher's training course.  These are techniques I use to actually get my 2 little boys to do yoga and as it has worked with them, I am sure it will go a long way in helping you with your children too.

6 Tips for Teaching Yoga to Children

Yoga for Children: – Tip #1:

Set Time for Yoga

Set aside a definite time for doing yoga.  If you have tried to maintain a regular yoga or meditation practice, you know that consistency is difficult and that the key to ! resolvin g this is to have a set time to do yoga.

As yoga needs to be done when the stomach is empty, it requires a bit of planning, so it is good to have a set time either before eating or a few hours after eating to practice.

Teaching Children Yoga – Tip #2:

Keep Children's Yoga Resources Handy

Children are often inspired by their peers and like to try things they see other kids doing.  So keep a yoga for kids book handy.  Make sure the book has plenty of illustrations and is easily accessible.  My kids love leafing through such books and then trying the poses and exercises they see.

You can also use YouTube or the internet for this.  Find kids yoga videos or show them the yoga illustrations I have on my website.  This is another way to get them motivated.

Yoga for Children – Tip #3:

Yoga Creativity

Let the children unleash their creative side and allow them to create unique poses that they have come up with.  Of course, you will be teaching them the regular kids yoga poses, but allowing them some freedom to come up with their own postures and movements is fun and engaging for them.

To not let such activity disrupt the flow of their yoga session, you might want to save this part for last.

Children's Yoga – Tip #4:

Do Yoga Shows

Children love to put on shows, so use that as a motivating factor by planning for them to do a yoga show for you from time to time.  As my boys are growing up now, they are 5 and 7 respectively, they get excited about the possibility of being featured on daddy's blog if they learn their yoga and do it well.  In the same way, allow them a stage to showcase their skills and it is a fun way to inspire and motivate them.

Teaching Yoga to Children – Tip #5:

Kids Yoga Class

Consider enrolling the children in a kids yoga class.  These are becoming more and more common, and are also part of many private and public school programs now as well.  My son, Shivum, had a weekly yoga class in his school and it was one of his favorite activities there.

Teaching Kids Yoga – Tip #6:

Explain the Benefits of Children's Yoga

How many times have you told your kids to eat this or that because it makes them stronger or will help them grow?  It is natural for kids to want to grow and blossom, so giving them information on all the ways yoga is going to benefit them is only going to make them more eager to take up its practice.

You will find a full list of benefits in the article: Yoga for Kids – Guideline and Benefits.

Teaching Yoga to Children Summary:

Just a reminder that much more information, specially with regard to teaching kid's yoga classes can be found in the guidelines article linked to above.   Here I have given you tips on how to inspire and motivate your children to do yoga.  Yoga is one of the great gifts we have been given, and your children will be forever grateful if you can pass it on to them as well.

PS: I have a new Mastery of Meditation and Yoga Facebook Fan Page.  Please stop by and Like it.  Also, if there are specific topics you want to learn more about, leave a message for me there and I will be glad to write about them on my blog.  I appreciate your love and support.

PPS: As always please feel free to share any tips you have used to teach yoga to children in the comments section below.  I am sure parents and yoga teachers will appreciate your input.

Meditations: The Use Of Sacred Phrases In Your Daily Meditations

Article by Chris Le Roy

There are many reasons for meditating, such as meditating for relaxation, stress relief or dealing with an issue. Sometimes you may even meditate for the fun of it because of the high you get coming off a meditation session. However, sometimes you may want to meditate for a purpose or to help reinforce something you want to achieve.

If you are an elite athlete you may meditate each day to help you in your mental preparation by meditating on what you will do to win your race or if you are a basketball player you may meditate on shooting a 3 point shot. You can achieve these outcomes by using phrases during your meditation session.

The objective of these phrases during a meditation session is to help reprogram your mind to achieve your objectives when your mind is in its most malleable state. The mind is most open to suggestion or reprogramming during a meditation session.

The Buddhist Monk uses sacred meditation phrases during a meditation session to help them in overcoming their transgressions and ill thoughts they have during the day. They are provided these sacred phrases from the teachings of Buddha, their teachers and the Dalai Lama. Each Sacred Phrase contains an important lesson that is to be learnt.

A sample sacred phrase by Buddha goes as -

Speak the truth, do not become angered and give when asked, even be it a little. By these three conditions one goes to the presence of the gods.

Another sacred phrase that is useful in daily life -

The wise who control body, speech and mind are indeed the consummately controlled.

The Buddhist religion and community are not the only religion that has sacred phrases that can be used during a meditation session. Some meditators who come from the Christian faith will use sacred phrases from the bible such as the Psalms or the Lords Prayer.

Virtually every religion has sacred phrases you can use through your meditation sessions and most of these phrases are about trying to help you become a better perso! n and to respect your fellow man.

Many people ask me how I incorporate these sacred phrases into my meditation. Well I first begin by identifying the sacred phrase I want to start with. I will read it aloud and once I have decided what I want to get from the meditation session then that is when I will start.

For example, I may want to meditate on how to deal with a person who is causing me grief or always seems to get me angry. I will find a sacred phrase that I can reflect on and use that phrase during my meditation.

I start off by simply beginning my meditation session with simple breathing exercises that help clear my mind and to get me to a state in which I can begin using the sacred meditation phrases. During a 20 minute meditation session, I find that it generally takes about 5 to 8 minutes to get to the point that I am ready for the next stage in the meditation cycle of using the sacred phrase.

Now that I am ready to begin the next stage, I start by reciting the sacred phrase in my mind. During the first recitation I will simply recite the sacred phrase without any reflection. On the second recitation of the sacred phrase I will begin paying close attention to the words in the sacred phrase and the meanings of the words. Over the next few recitations of those phrases I will begin to look at how I apply the meanings of the phrases to my everyday life.

I continue this process till I am ready to finish off my meditation. The last stage of my meditation cycle involves making a conscious commitment to improving my life and to take on board the values and meanings of the sacred phrase.

The core objective of using sacred phrases during your meditation sessions is to help you improve, you, as a person and the role that you will play on this earth. If we do not contemplate and reflect on these sacred phrases in this way then the phrases will be nothing more than pretty words and will not serve the purpose they were intended for.

When a patient undergoes Naturopathy treatment and peculiarity of approach lies in the fact that, In other systems the patient need not understand the technicalities involved in treatment but in Naturopathy treatment, the patients are required to have a good understanding of the laws governing health and disease. They are grounded well in respect of laws of Nature and are advised to follow them strictly for restoration of health. Health can only be restored or preserved or promoted or prevented from diseases by living in harmony with Nature. In Naturopathy no drugs or medicines are used. It is believed that diseases are outcome of accumulation of foreign matter in the body and health can be restored by eliminating them. Drugs are considered as add to the already accumulated toxins in body and therefore to be discouraged and eliminated. The manifestations of symptoms are indicative of reaction of the body and the only thing that is required to be done is to keep them through drugs and other means. As per Indian beliefs our body is made up of five great elements Earth, Water, Sun, Air and Ether. The imbalances among these five elements are responsible for diseases and the treatment of various diseases with the help of these five element is called Nature Cure. There is a common saying in Naturopathy that all the diseases but not all the patients are curable by Naturopathy. It depends upon vitality of the patients. If sufficient vitality is there in patients, he can be treated successfully irrespective of the type of disease he is suffering from. It is because cure is effected by vitality working within i.e. Nature. However at Naturopathy centers patients generally come for treatment of G.I.T. disorders, Asthma, Cardiac diseases, Obesity, Diabetes, Insomnia, Hypertension, Mental tension, Anxiety, Cold and Cough, Skin diseases and Occupational disorders as a last resort and surprisingly they get improved. In Naturopathy the methods employed ! in treat ment are quite easy and can even be practiced at home. 7 Tips for Better Meditation

Best Time for Meditation

Article by R.Pettinger

To make progess in meditation it is important to meditate at least once a day. If you are inspired then it is good to meditate 3 times a day. Regularity is very important for increasing your meditation capacity. Some people may say it is very hard to find time in a busy day to meditate. However if you really value something then you will find time. 3 times a day we find time to feed the body. We should also feel the necessity of feeding our soul, our inner being. If we value meditation then we will not want to miss our regular period of silence.

The best time to meditate is early in the morning. Early in the morning the earth is restful and more peaceful. Also there are less demands on your time. Therefore the morning consciousness is more conducive to meditation. Sri Chinmoy says:

"If you meditate in the morning, you will find that your meditation will be most fruitful. Before the sun rises, the earth -consciousness is not yet agitated."

In the Indian scriptures it is said the absolutely best time to meditate is between 3am and 4am. This is known as the Brahma Muhurta or hour of God. However in the west if we go to bed at 11 or 12 then this will be too early. If we try to meditate very early we may find our mind is sleepy making real meditation very difficult. However it is beneficial to be able to meditate early in the morning as the peace we feel will remain with us for the rest of the day. If it is possible to meditate facing the rising sun this will also be very beneficial as we will derive energy from the sun.

The next best time to meditate is in the evening. In the evening the atmosphere becomes a little more restful as we forget the troubles of the day. However if we meditate straight after finishing work then we may still have thoughts from the days activities going around in our mind. Before meditating it is good to take a shower and clear our mind of what has been going on during the day.

If you have time to meditate during the day that is good, however it! may be difficult to go deep, so a short meditation may be appropriate. Whatever time you meditate it is important to give the meditation a high priority. It is better to meditate once a day with our full attention and focus, rather than sit down several times a day with thoughts going through our mind.

Whatever time you choose and this may vary depending upon personal circumstances it is important to try and stick to your fixed time. Like regularity, punctuality is also very beneficial for making our meditation more powerful. It is like eating food, at a certain time we become ready for food. At another time we may become ready for meditation. Our inner being will be more receptive.

Meditation: The Pause That Refreshes

by ElDave

Article by Douglas Hardwick

Do you find yourself overworked, full of worry, or just plain stressed out? Then, it's time to relax. Give your mind a break and your immune system a boost. Learn to meditate.

For many people, meditation is something quite mysterious. After all, meditation is a practice most often associated with ancient spiritual traditions. But, the fact the matter is, meditation is simply a way of relaxing your mind and your body which, in turn, helps to separate you from your everyday problems and worries. It is a process that can be learned and practiced by even the busiest person in today's modern world.

There are many forms of meditation. However, experts often say that the various forms of meditation fall into two broad categories: concentrative meditation and mindfulness meditation.

In concentrative meditation, the person sits quietly and focuses attention on a physical object, a particular sound, an image, or on the most fundamental bodily process, breathing. Most people have heard of using a mantra to meditate. Here the person repeats a special word over and over. Repetition of the word provides the focus needed for meditation. No matter what the person uses, the purpose of the object of meditation is to give the mind an anchor to the here and now. As the mind becomes absorbed in its focus on the object of meditation, external distractions are reduced. The jumble of thoughts and anxiety so common to daily life disappear.

In mindfulness meditation, there is no specific object of meditation. Instead, the person sits quietly and simply witnesses or notices whatever happens to present itself mentally. It could be a thought, a mental image, a sound, or a bodily sensation. The goal of the person meditating is to observe whatever passes through the mind and let it go without reacting to it or elaborating on it. By practicing a kind of detached awareness of immediate experience, the person is encouraging the development of a calmer, clearer state of mind.

Learning to meditate ! is not a complex matter. However, as with any skill of value, learning to meditate does take some effort. Fortunately, there are many books and e-books on the market that can provide the beginner with simple "how to" instructions and helpful meditation exercises. Meditation also requires practice. But, the practice can be as little as ten minutes a day.

One key to successful meditation is consistency of effort. The person needs to find a time in the day to meditate regularly. The payoff for doing so may be enormous, both physically and psychologically. Modern research has shown that the regular use of meditation enhances immunity, lowers heart rate and blood pressure, reduces cholesterol, and speeds recovery. Psychologically, meditation seems to reduce anxiety and depression, while increasing creativity and feelings of happiness and joy. Given its power and simplicity, the practice of meditation should be included in any serious, holistic approach to health and wellness.

Cool Yoga Postures for Hot Summer Days

Article by Ellen Meador

Do you want to stay cool while practicing yoga during those hot summer days? We tend to move more in the summer months, which is a great thing! But when the sun's too oppressive or the day's too muggy, outdoor activities drop off. So, in the hot days of summer, you would do well to practice yoga postures that actually keep you cool.

Generally speaking, forward extensions are the cooling yoga postures practiced during hot days. Find a nice breezy location near an open window or door. The fresh air helps. Don't attack the poses. Remember to move into each of the yoga postures with deliberation and set up your alignment properly. The names of yoga poses that will give you a relaxing and cooling practice without overheating are Janu Sirasana (Head Knee Pose) and Marichiasana (Seated Twist with several variations). Along with these basic poses, more can be added, depending on the time you have available, your energy level, and how much experience you have had. You may add Ardha Baddha Padma Paschimottanasana (Half Bound Lotus Forward Bend), Triang Mukhaikapada Paschimottanasana (Three Limb Face Down Forward Bend), and Paschimottanasana (Full Forward Bend). There are so many variations on how they can be performed, yet that does not mean one can be sloppy! These five yoga postures translate into forward bends with a knee to the side, one leg in lotus, one leg in Virasana and twisting, with the final version of the pose looping arms around legs and the torso and using leverage. The final yoga pose is a plain forward extension with legs fully straightened.

In seated poses, press your legs down into the floor, keep that action as you bend at the hip joint, not the mid-back. Then lengthen your front spine as you stretch forward. In Iyengar Yoga, yoga postures are supported with props like straps to catch foot, or a bolster to support your torso. This way you should get the benefits of wonderful yoga by: 1) keeping yourself moving during hot summer days, which is good for your lymph system that ! cleanses your tissues, 2) keeping yourself cool which is not only appropriate but satisfying, and 3) keeping your tissues toned, strong and alert. Practicing yoga postures is all about appropriate balance in the self, both in the moment and in life.

So this summer, keep moving, stay cool, help your tissues stay cleansed and toned. Practice forward bends like Janu Sirsasana and Marichiansana. These yoga postures during hot summer days will avoid overheating. Enjoy the benefits and stress reduction that comes with practicing yoga postures in these busy times. Namaste

The entire human race is divided in fact into males and females. There are so many physical, physiological, mental and emotional differences that exist between the males and females. These differences actually make the males and females as unique as they are.

These gender differences are not just sexual in the orientation but they make each part of the human species unique in their own way. The general perceptions that exist between the genders and will only be highlighted here for developing a basic insight into the most fundamental differences between the genders.

An indispensable part of the discussion focuses on the fact that the overall nature has created the males to be the providers and the females to be the nurturers. This is why the basic infrastructure of the male body is much stronger than the females. The idea is not to cross paths with any ideologies or groups favouring certain some sensibilities. We shall keep the discussion here by restricted only to the basic infrastructure that defines the differences in the genders. The essential constitution of the male body is evenly directed towards strength, vigour and vitality. This is because the basic musculature and the skeletal systems are stronger than those of the females. Yoga for Men

The extra strength of the body has to be developed and by maintained for healthy and disease free life. The various body yoga postures and yoga positions done in the yoga can be very beneficial for men. There are most various yoga postures that enhance the muscles and bones of the body. Also the basic organic functioning of the body can be augmented that by doing yoga. Yoga is an option for healthy lifestyle for people of various age groups. A daily routine of yoga can be increasingly built up which can be followed as per one's convenience and interest.

It is seen that the men who practice yoga along with the other forms of exercises benefit more. This is because the yoga practices are even designed according to the physical,! physiol ogical and even emotional and mental aspects of the different constitution of the body.

Yoga is one form of complete exercise for the entire system not because no other form of physical exercise gives a complete workout to the external and as well as the internal organs of the system. The practice of specific asanas and pranayama can totally develop the internal organs and the respiratory system so that the flow of vital prana is fully regulated in the system. This in turn controls and keeps all the other systems working in to complete coordination and optimum state. Yoga for men can thus prove to be very beneficial for men as it allows them to develop all the faculties of the body simultaneously.

Several problems that men find difficult to discuss and some are a kind of threat to their masculinity can be well tackled with the practice of yoga. The issues of impotency and certain psychological situations can be totally controlled successfully by using certain asanas and practice of yoga nidra. It would be a beneficial exercise to chalk out the certain regime for oneself and practice it for consistent results.

Sound and Meditation

Article by Sharon Carne

It is common knowledge that meditation is a major tool for handling symptoms of stress. Developing a meditation practice can lower blood pressure, boost the immune system, calm the emotions and mind and connect you deeply with your inner essence or spirit. And there are many, many ways to meditate. In this article you are offered the opportunity to meditate with sound, or more specifically, the silence between the sounds.

Our sense of hearing is the most acutely tuned over a wider range than any of the other senses. Not only that, we hear with the whole body. Dr. Alfred Tomatis called our sense of hearing "a portal into the brain."

Sound (and hearing) and meditation can be a powerful combination. Studies have already shown that the combination of sound and guided meditation boosts the immune system more effectively than sound or meditation alone. Another powerful way of using sound and meditation together is the singing of mantras. An example of a well-known and loved mantra is "Om mani padme hum."

For the purpose of this article, the focus for the sound meditations below is more on the silence or space in between the sounds. There are two sound meditations offered for your exploration, a meditation with a flute track and a Tibetan sound meditation.

Flute Meditation

The first meditation is a five-minute track I recorded with my native flute. Before you begin either meditation, check in on the state of your body, mind and emotions, then check in again after the meditation to see if you notice any change. By listening to the flute meditation twice with a different focus each time, you can explore first, the sounds themselves and second, the spaces between the sounds.

To access the sound file please copy and paste the link at the end of the resource box below into your browser. The file is stored on my web site.

1. You will discover on the first listening that the sounds are unpredictable. This is intentional and offers the opportunity to exercise the inner ! ear and engage the mind. Another way to focus on the sounds is to just allow them to wash over you as you relax.

Make sure you check in with your body, mind and emotions before listening for the second time. This can give you valuable information to how the sound and/or your focus on the sound affect you. You might want your journal or a notepad and pen close by to take note as you explore the sound.

2. As you listen to the flute track the second time, focus on the space between the sounds. Note what happens in your body, mind and emotional state. Is it easier or more challenging than listening to the sounds? Does one way of listening need more concentration than the other? Our sense of focused listening is extremely sensitive and subtle.

Tibetan Sound Meditation

The second sound meditation is a Tibetan sound meditation. You can do this one waiting for the bus, standing in line or sitting on a park bench. Opportunities for this technique are limitless and offer a profound way to enter into emptiness. I experienced this technique at Tom Kenyon's, Sound Healer's Training. The instructions for this meditation are included in his book, "Brain States" on page 190. See below:

"The following exercise is a Tibetan Sound Meditation that brings you into a direct awareness of the space or silence from which all sound vibration emerges. It develops subtle perception and intuition and has a very calming influence on the body and mind.

1. Sit in a comfortable position and close your eyes.

2. Let your breath be slow and calm, taking about six seconds for the inhale and about six seconds for the inhale and about six seconds for the exhale. Breathe in this way for a minute or so before going on to Step 3.

3. Continuing to breathe in this calm and slow pattern, move your awareness into the sounds around you. But instead of focusing your attention on the sounds themselves, focus on the space or silence around the sound.

4. Get a sense of the spatial orientation of each sound. T! hat is, notice if a particular sound is close or faraway, above you or below you, etc.

5. Try to get a felt sense of the space or silence around each sound you hear and of the greater space that holds all of the sounds including you. Practice this form for ten to thirty minutes, longer if you wish.

Practicing this meditation once a day for thirty days or so will generate profound benefits, including a greater sense of calm and peace as well as health benefits associated with reduced stress. In addition, the consistent practice of this meditation will give you a deep and intuitive knowledge of how sound and vibration relate to your own consciousness."

As with the flute meditation, you might want to have a journal nearby to jot down observations and insights gained in your explorations.

Advantages of Meditation Chairs

Article by Tammy Greene

What Is A Meditation Chair? For proper meditation and healing exercises, it is believed that a correct posture should be maintained to reap maximum health benefits, which may otherwise lead to adverse effects on health and the meditation process will be of little or no use.

Some people, who wish to meditate for long hours and on routine basis, find it very intriguing that a correct postural position should be attained for meditation exercises involving sedentary position for long hours. So, in order to meditate comfortably they look for options available in the market ranging from meditation cushions, mattresses to meditations chairs.

Meditation chairs are sought after by numerous buyers, since a perfect seated posture is necessary for ideal meditation. As in many postural exercises especially during long time-span of meditation, the body attains a relaxed stage for which a comfortable base is needed, which is provided by meditation chairs. Meditation chairs supports the body in a comfortable position by molding according to the body stretches, and helps to erase cramps and gives you total relaxation. The meditation chairs are designed ergonomically and prevent the body of a person from slumping during focused phases of meditation and relaxing exercises because of its titled design.

What Are The Types Of Meditation Chairs Available In The Market?Chinese meditation chairs are the most historic models, which do not have features like ergonomic design. There is no padding for support, but the chair is wide, which gives enough space to exercise meditation postures involving sedentary positions and spreading of legs for prolonged time.

The sea grass chair is conceived for practicing postural position of a lotus position. This chair has all the features which allow a person to meditate comfortably by crossing ankles, feet and follow the lotus pose. Since this chair has a support for your spine, you will not have any problems or complains of back pain and stiff muscles.

Tilt! seat ch airs and kneeling chairs are ergonomically designed chairs that allow comfort of knees and legs while maintaining certain meditation positions.

Besides all these alternatives, the market is abundant with style, size and shapes of ergonomically preferred meditation chairs and other accessories like mattress, cushions, sofas and tables or benches for extended support.

How To Maximize Benefits By Carefully Selecting Meditation Chairs? The selection criterion for a meditation chair depends on the body size, height and weight for enhanced comfort. Padded chairs are good options for comfort while practicing deep meditation postures for long hours. It is also good to take into account the back support to keep your spine straight to ward off any sort of back pain or complains regarding body aches since this mars the positive effects a person is attaining from meditation.

The prices of a meditation chair are often reflective of a design and the material used. So, to ward off any complains for stiff muscles and body aches it's a good choice to invest your money in the quality and ergonomically designed products. Choose one which is movable and has push back options as it will give you enough room to lean forward and spread your body in a relaxing position while meditating.
